QuasiTV 2.0

QuasiTV 2.0 is here!  The big new capability is user profiles (requires QuasiTV Premium IAP), but a lot of other things were improved in the process.  The web ui got a bunch of improvements and fixes.  Users who bought the 'unlimited channel' upgrade (now renamed to QuasiTV Pro) can now edit premade channels through the in app editor and the web admin.  There is also a new main menu replacing the simple popup that would display when the back button was pressed.

The new update is currently in review on Google Play and will be rolled out to amazon in the upcoming days.

Lets go into some details on the changes.

User Profiles

Once purchasing 'QuasiTV Premium' or purchasing the upgrade from Pro To Premium (cheaper option if previously bought the unlimited channel upgrade), a profiles menu will appear on the main settings page.  Clicking on that will allow you to create the "owner" profile.  The owner cannot be deleted and will have full admin.

Once the owner profile is created, all existing channels will be assigned to the owner.  When a profile creates a channel, they are the owner of the channel and depending on other user's settings, they may or may not be able to edit that channel.  All channels can be shared between profiles, but only the owner and those with the right permissions can edit it.

In the image above you will see there are 3 main permissions:

  • Admin - Full access to edit all channels, create channels, and access the settings (only admins can access the settings)
  • Create Channels - Has the ability to create channels
  • Edit Channels - Has the ability to edit channels created by other users
You can also set a pin on the account which is required to be entered when changing to that profile.

Under the menu option, you can choose what entries are visible when accessing the main menu.  This is useful for setting up accounts for children.  I know my kids likes to accidentally click things on the UI and this way I can remove everything but the profile switch and the guide.

If you choose to not give a user the ability to create or edit channels, they will be prompted with an admin login page if they try to enter the channel editor.  It will force them to select an admin account (and enter the pin) in order to access the channel editor.  Same goes for the settings menu option if the user is not an admin.  If you want to restrict access fully, just hide the menu items completely.

When switching profiles, only the channels associated with that profile will be visible in the guide.

Channel Editor

The top level actions in the channel editor were changed a little.

  • 'Remove' is now only for custom channels.  Removing a custom channel from a profile will only fully delete the channel if no other profile is using the channel.
  • 'Import' will now allow you to not only import channels from other instances of QuasiTV, it will let you "import" another channel from another profile on the same instance.  When importing a channel created by another profile, both profiles share the same channel.  It will have the exact same schedule
  • 'Premade' was renamed from hide.  It will let you hide any premade channel from your profile (or single profile users if QuasiTV Premium isnt purchased).
  • 'Filter' was added to let you toggle between viewing all channels, premade channels only, or custom channels only

As mentioned earlier, Pro and Premium users can now edit premade channels just like custom channels.

Web Admin

The web admin ui has gotten a significant upgrade.  The version of flutter was upgraded which brings some performance improvements.  There were also some fixes, one being that shows / movies towards the end of a long channel list were being cut off.  This was caused by the drag and drop library previously used.  That library was replaced, so you will see slightly different drag and drop behaviors now (mainly on mobile where you will not have a handle to drag.  Users must long press the item and then drag to reorder it).

The web admin was also updated to support profiles and all the other capabilities mentioned earlier.  It now should let you do basically everything you can do in app except purchase upgrades, create the initial owner account, and do the server setup.
